Professional Performance Development Group is seeking certified Medical Coders for Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. This is a rare opportunity within the 59th Medical Wing to work up to 90% remote. Candidates must reside in the San Antonio metropolitan area.

Education:  Associate’s degree or higher in Health Information Management OR a university certificate in medical coding OR at least 30 semester hours’ university/college credit that includes relevant coursework such as anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, and/or pharmacology OR Successful completion of an American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) coding certification preparation course for professional services or facility coding that includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health information management concepts, and pharmacology.

Certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P), and Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), and National Alliance of Medical Auditing Specialists (NAMAS) Certified Evaluation & Management Auditor (CEMA). Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (can be obtained prior to starting, if selected).

Experience: Must possess a minimum of four (4) years of medical coding and/or auditing experience in two (2) or more medical, surgical and ancillary specialties within the past 10 years. A minimum of one (1) year of performance in each specialty is required to be qualifying.

Other knowledge, skills, or abilities: Advanced knowledge and understanding of industry nomenclature; medical and procedural terminology; anatomy and physiology; pharmacology; and disease processes. Candidate must complete a basic medical coding test.

  • Ensures strict confidentiality of medical records and audit findings.
    Interacts with Military Training Facility staff regarding coding rules, documentation policies, procedures, and regulations; obtains clarification of conflicting, ambiguous, or non-specific documentation.
  • Researches, analyzes, and responds to inquiries regarding compliance, inappropriate coding, denials, and billable services.
    Trains, instructs, and/or provides technical support to Military Training Facility staff and medical coders/reviewers/trainers as appropriate regarding coding compliance documentation, and regulatory provisions.
  • Trains, educates and informs providers and military training facility staff through informational coding program office business rules.
  • Provides second-level review of outpatient coding assignment for billing purposes to ensure compliance with legal and procedural policies to ensure optimal reimbursements while adhering to regulations prohibiting unbundling and other questionable practices.
  • Audits medical record documentation to identify inaccurate coding services; prepares reports of findings and meets with providers and medical coders to provide education and training on accurate coding practices and compliance issues.
  • Maintains technical currency through continuing education and training opportunities.
  • Monitors ever-changing regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for the full spectrum of services provided.
  • Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines and conventions when choosing the most appropriate diagnosis, operation, procedure, ancillary, or evaluation and management code to ensure ethical, accurate, and compete coding.

This is a 90% remote position following an on-site training period. Candidates MUST reside in the San Antonio metropolitan area.
